In March 2006 Philip Grandjean et al has published a paper on the negative effects of pesticides exposure in pregnancy and later high bloodpressure in the 6-7 year old children, together with negative effects on their cognitive function. In December 2006 Grandjean published an overview of the many neurotoxicants involved and possible to do damage in children.Ref:Developmental neurotoxicity of industrial chemicals by P Grandjean and PJ Landrigan.2006 Lancet vol 368 pp2167-2178. Another important article is published in the NEJM on parturition. Surfactant protein A is a protein made by the fetus under the influence of glucocorticoids important for lung function. This protein is also known to belong to the innate immune system. Now it is demostrated that this protein also stimulates the myometrium to start labour. The protein is produced by the CLARA-cells in the lung and these cells proliferate under the influnece of dioxins. This might explain the sofar unexplained increase in prematurity in the western world.
